Microsoft Corp. will focus on growing its own advertising and Internet search business after it withdrew its takeover offer for Yahoo Inc., Chairman Bill Gates said Friday.
Microsoft has not presented an alternative strategy to compete with its dominant rival in the Internet business, Google Inc., since withdrawing a $47.5 billion bid for Yahoo Inc. last weekend.
Analysts have been left wondering how the world's largest software maker will increase its share of that multibillion dollar market without a major tie-up.

Microsoft said today it was appealing against a record €899m (£710m) fine imposed by the European commission for using high prices to discourage software competition.
"Microsoft today filed to the (EU) court of first instance an application to annul the European commission decision of February 27," the US software giant said in a statement.
"We are filing this appeal in a constructive effort to seek clarity from the court," it said.

Security researcher Aviv Raff has published code that would allow someone to take control of a computer running Internet Explorer, but there's a catch. He's not saying exactly where he's hidden the attack.
"Somewhere in my blog, I embedded a proof-of-concept code that exploits this zero-day vulnerability," Raff wrote in a Wednesday blog posting. A zero-day attack is a previously undisclosed software flaw that has not been fixed by the software maker.
The bug, which affects Internet Explorer 7 and IE 8, could allow an attacker to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer. Raff informed Microsoft of the flaw on Tuesday and the software vendor has not yet patched it, Raff said.

The biggest cash pile in the technology industry historically has belonged to Microsoft Corp., but now it has some company, and it's a familiar name: Apple Inc.
Microsoft has reduced its cash balance to $26.3 billion through large stock buybacks, dividends and acquisitions. The balance was more than $64 billion less than four years ago.
Apple's balance has been growing - reaching $19.4 billion at last count - as a result of the cash generated by its Mac and iPod lines. Less than four years ago, its stockpile was $5.5 billion.

With Yahoo off the table, Microsoft plans to challenge Google's online-ad juggernaut alone. A behind-the-scenes look at its provocative strategy.
It's April, and Microsoft's (MSFT) top U. S. salesman for online advertising, Keith Lorizio, is visiting clients in New York City. In a midtown office tower, he sits down with Nicholas Utton, the gregarious chief marketing officer at online broker E*Trade (ETFC). Utton is plenty impressed with Microsoft's technology, and he's a big advertiser on the company's MSN Money site. But when it comes to Internet search sites, the largest and most lucrative advertising market online, Utton makes it clear that Microsoft is, as he sees it, way behind front-runner Google (GOOG). "They're not getting much of our search dollars," he says.

Brandon LeBlanc: I caught up with Deryl McCartney, Marketing Manager for the Windows Vista Logo Program, to get a general update on Certified for Windows Vista product as of today.
Just to re-cap: Certified for Windows Vista products are products that carry the above logo. This logo represents a group of applications and hardware that have gone through an extensive certification process that means they work great with Windows Vista. We want users who are looking for devices, applications, or PC components to easily be able to identify the ones that will give them the best experience in Windows Vista today. When I go into a store looking for something for my PCs I always "look for the logo".
As of April, we currently have over 5,000 products that are Certified for Windows Vista. Since last July, the amount of Certified for Windows Vista products has almost doubled! As you can see - we've seen quite a bit of growth with new Certified for Windows Vista products entering the market.

A US-based security consultancy plans to release software next month that it claims will help employers launch ethical phishing attacks against their own employees.
The phishing software is designed to test how susceptible staff or customers are to phishing attacks, according to its maker, Intrepidus Group.
The company claims on its Web site the software allows security testers to pull content from other sites and drop it as a phishing e-mail, add e-mail addresses, set up attack schedules, and then track which staff are the weakest links.
