Microsoft's latest desktop Windows Operating System update codename Longhorn is not due till 2006 yet the pre-beta builds have given people an insight into the ambitious goals Microsoft has for the future - and here we present LongHorn build 4083 for your review...
Although elements such as WinFS have now been dropped in order to allow Microsoft to hit it's target ship date (What was it you said Steve "December 31, 2006"?) these glimpses of the future of Windows are no less exciting.
Build #4083 was the build WinBeta originally expected to be released at WinHEC earlier this year but Microsoft chose to release build 4074.
This build is for AMD 64 bit cpus but do not be suprised to see a 32bit build released for you to test in the near future.

From those screenshots it looks like the sidebar has been taken out? Or have they just not had it open here?
Other then the sidebar I do not see people’s fascination with Longhorn, the title bars are hugely over-sized on explorer windows and the bulk is rather off-putting! Are people mainly interested because it is new?

I'd say you're right PretenderNX. Most of the excitement at the moment is because it is new. Lots of visitors here like to be out on the edge as it were with new software and hardware...

i dont see what the biggy is, i would have thought they would be in the 5k build range by now, and what about the good stuff, winfs and the other a few others, without that it just another glorified winxp OS.

PretenderNX, I'm personally interested in the truly innovative stuff, like the WinFS and the Indigo.
I do like the Avalon eye candy, make no mistake, and it will be a good selling point, but as far as the core OS operating stuff is concerned, the best news I've heard in this last flurry of rumours is that MS have finally decided to shift to the 2k3 code base.
It really did take them too long to bite the bullet, didn't it ...

Evidently I will have to learn the new UIS skinning format just to make this OS's GUI look decent. Microsoft really needs to hire some people with graphics talent if that is the best they can come up with. Sad, so sad .....

Send me more screenshots (sidebar especially) , see if dwm can be enabled, and if it can, send me the desksrvs and all .msstyles+screenies. I dont have an x86-64 chip so ill need to skin/port my desksrvs and logonUIs remotely.

To respond to LightStar's comment as well...It's a temporary skin. Sorta like Watercolor in the XP betas. It'll last until around beta2, at which time we'll see the real final skin in all likelyhood. And basicly, it's there now so they can protect their final look until they decide it can be shown to the public

The screenshots dismay me. I still run Win2K and have run NT since 96. Microsoft has been adding more and more "eye candy" that just gets in the way and clutters the screen. I want to view data, not pretty icons and title bars that don't change. If you look at the new start button on XP it thrusts microsoft programs in front of you, and makes "all programs" relatively small. I know that you can change some of the settings, but most people won't and its dificult. I don't like the new bulbous buttons of XP, they don't tell me anything more, and take up more screen real estate, Trust me, I can deal with contrasting colors.

I didn't read all the threads, so if someone said this already...ooopps. You guys ever use a Mac? Cause man does that ever look like a Mac. Not that that's a bad thing, Windows could do with a cosmetic make over, and a Mac aint a bad thing to copy in that regard.

oh dear god! i hate the gui! lol. yes it's simple. which is good for some people. but for me and i think i speak for some others that are "advanced windows users". i hate it!
thank god it can be changed. HOPEFULLY!
i read there will be 3 gui settings. kinda like windows classic, windows xp, and i guess they are adding longhorn 3d features. that's all cool. but god damnit! i wish they would make it more modular instead of sticking internet explorer code into every peice of the gui. lol.
oh well. my fav gui is kde. followed by windows explorer..... and yes i like the command line from time to time. but i guess i'm the minority microsoft won't listen to. dang it. i just hope they don't botch this upgrade....
also would it kill them to take some screen shots of the system services running? i wanna see what the new behind the scenes programs are doing.

This build is strange... So strange that PROneTworks people say that it's fake. Maybe the sidebar is missing because it's not 4083, it's a changed 3683, or a mix of 4074 (64 bit) and 3683. There was another build (4183), which was also 3683. 4099 was 4029. And 5074 was 4074. so there are many fake builds on the net, but, if it's real, then excuse me for saying 4083 fake. A quick tip: Check whether the version has "My Computer", or "Computer". If the first (My Computer) is present, it's fake. If it's the second (Computer), then the build is real.
