Reports that Dell is experiencing a high rate of returns for notebooks that include solid-state disks are flatly untrue, a Dell spokeswoman said Tuesday.
On Monday, news reports circulated that claimed "a large computer manufacturer" was experiencing return rates of between 20 and 30 percent on notebook models equipped with solid-state drives. The reports also said that the manufacturer was experiencing SSD failure rates of between 10 and 20 percent before they were installed in notebooks.
The report was sourced from Avi Cohen, general partner at Avian Securities, who said he had made his determinations from a trip through Asia. Cohen confirmed his report to ExtremeTech on Tuesday, specifying that the "large computer manufacturer" he cited was in fact Dell, and the supplier was Samsung.
Asked to comment, Dell spokeswoman Anne Camden said that the defect numbers were off by a factor of ten.
