The battle between Microsoft and Apple surpassed new levels this week as Apple unleashed Tiger, which contains more than 200 new features, and Microsoft's preview of Longhorn which also contains highly-anticipated features.
Longhorn, the company's next operating system due to release in 2006, was featured at WinHEC earlier this week showcasing some of its many features such as a new XML-based document format, code-named "Metro," that it will use in Longhorn to both print and share documents.
Among other features Gates discussed was the ability of PCs running Longhorn to take advantage of storage that combines traditional hard drives and nonvolatile flash memory. By using flash for frequently accessed information, laptop PCs will be able to get much better battery life given that substantially less power is used accessing flash than is needed to spin a hard drive.
"Longhorn is our big investment," Gates said acknowledging that many of its key features will not be evident until much later test versions of the new Windows. A fraction of the new features will make it into an initial beta this summer. Microsoft wouldn't say when a subsequent beta, with more new features, will arrive, but Gates said the company is still focused on trying to release the final version of Longhorn in time to make it into PCs sold for the holiday season in 2006.
On the flipside, Apple, which just released its highly anticipated Mac OS X 10.4 codenamed Tiger, is in a fighting spirit. Tiger features a new way to access information, Spotlight, a desktop-search technology, and Dashboard.
Spotlight is considered the most important of the new features because it promises to let people search their hard drive for files just as they would search for a Web page using Google.
Apple also introduced upgraded models of its Power Mac G5 desktop that come up with to 8GB of 400MHz DDR SDRAM and a graphics card with up to 256MB of video memory.

longhorn may look more promising than tiger.... but the deal is tiger is out now, longhorn still crashes when you look at it and JUST FINALLY got into beta. Apple never puts dates on the release of a product for the reason of stability until it is FULLY ready. I'm pretty sure there will be another one or two new releases of osx before longhorn hits shelves... and to think i use a pc :-P

Apple thinks that it can just get away with releasing public announcements that Tiger is better or just as good as Longhorn, only a simpleton would believe this.
Hands up who thinks stock market traders get their tips from gossip, nope they get them from experience and vast sources of news reports -- not just one. Think what happened when Google came out with 1GB email, MS did 2GB... does anyone really think that Apple can beat Microsoft, this time around?!

in all honesty its about time, apple and windows released a 64-bit os architecture. linux java script:addsmilie('') has had one out years before apple and micrsoft even thought about it. However as iamthesex pointed out, apple has their os out now. windows has been behind the times when it comes to this as it has has had to re-write its entire os just to to ensure a stable and powerful os. "focused on trying to release the final version of Longhorn" we all know windows os's are crap when they are released and they never ever ever realease a finalised version of their os to start with. they always rush the product to get it out on the shleves and then patch as they need to as they go along which is so bad! i think apple has the edge as they have a stable 64-bit platform which gives them a big lead over microsoft already! all i am gonna say is gd luck ms! they're gonna need it

I don't know what all this talk about instability is all about. Windows XP is the most stable OS I've ever used. Secure? That's a different story. But what is secure? Certainly not Linux.
The thing to note here is not who was first, it's who is best. Until Longhorn has gone gold, nobody will know. But from what I've seen from the WinHEC videos, MS will clearly outpace everybody else.
The only way Apple will ever kick MS's ass is if they design their OS to run on multiple platforms. If there was an Apple OS for x86 architecture, I'd try it out in a heartbeat.
All that's needed to unseat MS is a solid product that runs on x86. So far, there's no competition. I for one would love to see some competition.

windows xp is the most stable version of windows that i have seen, however you must note that windows is not as stable as unix as such windows is not widely adopted in server systems for that very fact. also linux is only as secure as you make it, plus linux gives you a lot more control over your system than windows does.
Also longhorn is based upon certain linux technologies.
ms may outpace everyone once it has gone gold, but the question is will people want to take it up if they have to pay for it? i'm a linux user and i am lookign forward to seeing microsofts new os, as it looks mighty nice! however i hold reservation on how wide spread the effects of Apple might be, as linux and apple users are on the increase, it might only be by a couple of percent but its still market that microsoft are loosing.
but yes i do have to agree that apple would be better makign their product available on cross platforms like linux/unix.

Windows XP will run forever on solid hardware and without any crappy 3rd party software interfering. It's not more or less stable than Linux, it's just stable. Windows ME was unstable, that piece of shit would break when the power was off.
Just curious, what Linux technologies is Longhorn based off of?
