Alaska Airlines to offer new Windows 8-powered entertainment tablets to passengers starting February 1

As airlines continue to remove seat-back screens from their aircraft, claiming that most passengers now travel with their own entertainment devices like tablets and laptops and prefer them over the outdated, slow entertainment units on seats, some airlines are now trying to cater to the minority of passengers that don’t.

Today, Alaska Airlines revealed new plans to provide customers with Windows-powered entertainment-focused tablets in-flight. Starting February 1st, Alaska will start offering the tablets to passengers flying on long-haul routes for $8-10. The tablets will come preloaded with the latest Xbox Live games, TV shows, movies, digital magazines and more. Passengers will also be able to access the internet on these tablets on certain flights. First Class and MVP Gold75K passengers will be offered the tablets at no charge.

“Our customers tell us they love our new, free, inflight entertainment service, and we’re listening. We’re excited to continue offering our premium content – like mainstream movies and TV to reward customers for trying out Alaska Beyond Entertainment,” – Halle Hutchison, Managing Director of Brand Marketing, Alaska Airlines
