App Update Roundup: Viber, CNN, OnStar RemoteLink and more get updated

Did you know that smartphone owners use an average of 27 apps and spend around 30 hours on them in a month? Browsing the web, playing games, connecting to social networks, watching cat videos, etc., and all these tasks require apps that need support and upkeep. Below is our roundup of some of the latest apps on Windows Phone that grabbed an update recently.

The official CNN app for Windows Phone received update but no new change log was offered, we didn’t notice anything new, so the changes are likely under-the-hood.

Lumia Extras+Info was also updated with no change log provided, although some sites noticed that the Firmware Update Notifier version number has changed from 1.2.10.4 to 1.2.11.1. Your guess is as good as ours as to what this means. Could this be in preparation for the upcoming 8.1 GDR2 update? Maybe.

Voice and Video chat app Viber was updated, also no change log in sight (these should be mandatory!). We’ve come to assume that the lack of a change log means that what was updated wasn’t worth mentioning. The update could have been to fix an embarrassing typo, and if that was the case, we understand why no admission was made.

Home Automation app, SmartThings, was updated and, no, is that, is that a changelog?! Why yes it is! Included is a new Hub Detail screen, a Z-Wave utility screen, a new Getting Started experience, new password recovery and account sharing options, as well as new Dashboard & Things View tooltips. The update adds to the already well-made and well-designed app.

Last but certainly not least is an update to OnStar’s RemoteLink app that gives you access to your Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC vehicle. The update includes a new UI designed to make navigating the app faster and easier, the ability to view data usage of a vehicle’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot in addition to other bug fixes. However, the update does remove several (but not all) previously offered features for electric cars.
