August 12 is the deadline for business users still on Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2

Business users on Windows 8.1 are required to move to Windows 8.1 Update 1 by Tuesday, August 12.  Incidentally, Microsoft will release its monthly Patch Tuesday (“August” update) on the same day. If business users fail to get their systems upgraded to Windows 8.1 Update 1, they will not be able to snag any further security patches from the company.

In April, Microsoft released Windows 8.1 Update 1, the first update to the company’s Windows 8.1 operating system. The update was mandatory for all Windows 8.1 users, who were roughly given a month time to move to the latest version. However, the company later — addressing user complaints — extended the deadline to June 10 for normal consumers, and August 12 for business users.

Besides that, business users on Windows Server 2012 R2 should also update their systems to Windows Server 2012 R2 Update 1. Business users can snag the update using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Windows Intune, and/or System Center Configuration Manager.

As ZDNet reminds, Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry systems are also clocking off August 12. It should be noted that those on Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 R2 don’t need to worry about this deadline — although it is quite important to be running the latest updates.
