You have heard of smartphones exploding, but how often do you hear about laptops shattering? Well, that’s exactly what happened with a Pennsylvania woman when her Dell laptop burst into pieces.
Loretta Luff, 72, said she was checking emails and playing spider solitaire when her Dell Inspiron laptop exploded, setting her shirt on fire. "The next thing I knew, my shirt was on fire, I grabbed that and took that off and I think that's when I singed my hair," she said.
Authorities say that the Lithium ion battery inside the laptop exploded. "All of a sudden it just blew up." adds Luff who had burns on her face, arms, chest, and foot. "And I think when I came down on a piece of the hot battery part, I came down and stepped on that." The doctors pulled out “stuff” from her nostrils, she said.
Besides, the flames also damaged her carpet, desk, and even her dog’s bed. But why did her laptop explode? Dell, in a statement said that it could be because of an incompatible or counterfeit battery or charger.
"Dell will take appropriate steps to investigate this incident. It's also important to note that, in our product documentation, Dell tells customers that "using an incompatible battery or a third-party battery may increase the risk of fire or explosion and that they should replace the battery only with a battery purchased from Dell that is designed to work with their Dell computer."
