Firmware update gives Surface Pro 2 a significant battery boost

Not long after the Surface Pro 2 was launched, a firmware update was released that made changes to the power modes used by the WiFi adaptor. According to benchmark run by Anandtech, the update made significant improvements to the battery life of the device.

In tests that loaded a series of websites until a fully charged battery is depleted, the unpatched Surface Pro 2 lasted for 6.68 hours. With the firmware update installed, this increased to 8.33 hours. From this test alone, it seems that the difference made by the firmware update is far from insignificant — there is an improvement of nearly 25%.

A second text involved playing a movie until the battery died, and while the difference is not quite so marked, there is still a noticeable difference in battery life – 7.73 hours compared to 6.65 hours.

It’s rare to see such an improvement from a software update, but these benchmarks just go to show what can be achieved.

If you own a Surface Pro 2, make sure you have the latest firmware update installed. After all, who can say no to longer battery life!
