May 2015 market share: Windows 7 drops slightly, Windows 8.1 climbs

According to new data from Net Applications for the month of May 2015, Windows 7 is still the dominant Windows operating system, while Windows 8.1 continues to climb in market share.

Windows 8.1 held a 10.55% market share back in March of 2015, climbing to 11.16% in April and now holding a 12.88% market share as of May 2015. Windows 7, on the other hand, now holds a market share of 57.76%, down from the previous month’s 58.39%. 

Windows 7 remains as the top desktop operating system, with Windows XP as the second most popular choice. Windows 8.1 rounds off the top three with a share of 12.88%, while Mac OS X 10.10 comes in fourth place with a market share of 4.20%. Windows 10 has made an appearance in the market share data, snagging 0.13% of the share.
