Microsoft details Surface RT support lifecycle, will be supported for four years

Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet has been in the market for nearly a month now and today Microsoft has revealed that the Surface RT will be supported for four years. This information comes from an update to the Surface RT support lifecycle webpage. Since this device is a consumer device, Microsoft is not planning on extending the support date.

As we all know, Microsoft tends to support consumer and business versions of Windows for five years and business editions receiving an additional five years of extended support. However, since the Surface RT is a hardware/software combination, Microsoft has decided to end mainstream support on April 11th of 2017 with no extended support date since this device is considered a consumer device. This pretty much means we will see firmware updates until April of 2017. The Surface RT already saw its very first firmware update two weeks ago which improved stability and performance of the device. This support lifecycle only applies to the tablet hardware itself and does not apply to software such as Windows RT or the Office bundle that is included.
