Microsoft doles out digital discounts, starting with $20 off Ryse for Xbox One Written by Mark Wilson on February 17, 2014, 12:21PM
Every likes to save a few dollars here and there, and if the savings can be made without even having to leave the house, so much the better! Microsoft is starting to experiment with discounts in the digital realm -- and things kick off with a healthy $20 off Ryse: Son of Rome for Xbox One. While the offering of discounts is nothing new in itself, this seems to be another example of Microsoft listening to what people are asking for.
Xbox Studio manager Mike Ybarra, writing on Twitter, said that the deals were in response to customer demand.
Lot of people asked for better deals on our digital marketplace, so we’re testing some…— Mike Ybarra (@XboxQwik) February 17, 2014
Starting tomorrow -- that 18 February -- Ryse will be available for just $39.99, and the offer runs until 24 February. When the first offer ends, another deal starts on add-on content, although no details have been provided.
In an exchange on Twitter, Ybarra confirmed that the price reduction would be matched in the UK, but there was no word about other regions -- although it would be surprising if something similar did not happen globally.
As he points out, the sale price for Ryse is lower than you would expect to pay for a second-hand in a store, so it is a very good deal. Digital purchases offer far greater scope for discounting because of the difference in overheads, and it will be interesting to see whether this results in a move away from physical media, and just what other great deals the future might hold.
