Microsoft inches closer to Office Online's launch, touts its features

Microsoft has quietly posted a comparison chart on its website that depicts the features of several of its Office plans. The page also confirms that Microsoft has indeed rebranded its Office Web Apps to Office Online, and perhaps the service will be launched very soon.

Office Online is the rebranded version of Office Web Apps, an online productivity suite that includes free webified versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint that the Redmond giant has been offering since 2010. But due to its old name, it couldn’t allure many customers.

Office Online, which can be accessed from any popular browser, as expected, doesn’t offer access to smartphones or provides you with options for offline storage. These are two features that you would get if you paid for Office 365 and Office 365 University. Additionally, Skype will also be missing.

Office Online, or Office Web Apps, as it is called now, is targeting Google Drive, Google’s online productivity suite, as competition. Microsoft also wants to remove any confusion created by the “web apps” name. Take a look at the chart below.
