Microsoft rolls out firmware updates for Surface Pro 2 and Surface 2, fixes various issues

Microsoft has rolled out firmware updates for the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, as part of the February 2014 Patch Tuesday. The update for Surface Pro 2 addresses various concerns while the update for the Surface 2 simply addresses networking and Bluetooth-related issues.

The firmware contains the 'Surface Display Panel' (v1.0.2.0), which provides tuning to the Surface display calibration. The firmware update also adds an updated 'Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware' (v24.00.50), which fixes an issue where the device would not go into hibernation and where battery percentage was reported incorrectly.

The firmware update also contains 'Surface Pro System Aggregator Firmware' (v2.04.0150) which fixes an issue where the device would reset upon repeated Surface Cover attach or detach, fixes an issue where the On Screen Keyboard would unexpectedly pop-up even though the Cover is attached, and fixes an issue where the Cover is not detected after waking from sleep.

The Surface Pro 2 firmware update also features 'Surface Touch Cover 2 Firmware Update Device (v2.0.228.0)' and 'Surface Type Cover 2 Firmware Update Device (v2.0.226.0)' to improve two-finger touchpad use.

The Surface 2, on the other hand, received a firmware update today, updating the 'Marvell AVASTAR Bluetooth Radio Adapter' (v14.62.28058.10171). This update improves the Bluetooth audio related issues as well as issues related to Bluetooth keyboard and mouse unavailability when waking the device. This update also resolves wireless network connectivity issues.

The first-generation Surface RT did not receive any firmware updates today. The first-generation Surface Pro, on the other hand, received an update that fixed an issue with the device resetting when waking from sleep, resetting upon repeated Surface Cover attach or detach, fixed an issue where the On Screen Keyboard would unexpectedly pop-upĀ even though Surface Cover is attached, and fixed an issue where the Surface Cover is not detected after waking from sleep. The update also includes 'Surface Pro UEFI' (v1.6.50), which improves experience when using a Surface Cover on your Surface Pro.

The firmware update for the Surface Pro 2, released back in December of 2013, caused a lot of headaches for device owners and resulted in Microsoft pulling the update. We are not sure if today's firmware update fully addresses the concerns brought up by this botched update. If you were affected by the botched update, let us know if today's update fixes anything or if you continue to see issues.
