The Build 2014 conference is just around the corner, and will kick off in San Francisco, where the Redmond-based company is expected to make some important announcements, including the launch of Windows Phone 8.1, as well as the Windows 8.1 Update 1. It seems these two are not just the only announcements Microsoft is expected to make at the event. According to the well-connected Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft may share some details about Windows 9 Threshold, which is expected to launch in Spring 2015.

“At the developer confab this week, officials are expected to disclose fully the feature sets of the Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8 Update 1 operating systems. They also, according to sources, will share a bit about the next major version of Windows — Windows 9, codenamed “Threshold,” aka Windows 9, which is supposedly due to arrive in the spring of 2015,” says Mary Jo Foley.

Although the company is unlikely to share details about the feature set this release is expected to bring at the table, Foley mentions the company might talk about the unified Windows 9 SKU which will “run on Windows Phones, ARM-based Windows tablets/PCs, phablets and other kinds of devices.” It may not include a desktop version, which means that users may not be able to run the native Windows apps on it, but it will be frequently updated by Microsoft via Windows Store.

At this point, the available information related to Windows 9 is pretty scarce, so it’s hard to speculate about it. There’s no word about the return of the Start button either, but Build will kick off in all its glory tomorrow, so let’s just wait for it. Until then speculate as you may.
