Microsoft treats some Windows Phone owners with extra 20 GB of free Microsoft SkyDrive storage for one year

Microsoft has just sent out an email to select Windows Phone owners, giving them an extra 20GB of free SkyDrive storage for one year – effectively bumping the standard 7GB of space to 27GB of storage space. Microsoft makes mention of this gift being for “Windows Phone Enthusiast Users.”

“To show our appreciation of Windows Phone customers, we are giving you an extra 20 GB of free SkyDrive storage for one year. This is in addition to the 7 GB of free SkyDrive storage that all customers currently have,” Microsoft stated in an email. We got ahold of this email, as you can see from the image above.

Upon clicking the redemption link in the email, Microsoft will give you an additional 20GB of SkyDrive storage that will expire after one year. No word on how this will affect your files if you do in-fact rack up 20GB of data on SkyDrive.

“A great way of using this extra storage is to automatically back up the photos and videos you take on your phone. When your photos or files are on SkyDrive, you can still get to them if something happens to your phone,” Microsoft recommends in the email.

Is everyone getting this extra SkyDrive storage? Who qualifies as an “enthusiast user?” We’re reached out to Microsoft for a statement on the matter and will update you when we get some answers. In the mean time, check your email inbox and let us know if you got the same email too.

Update: It appears that everyone is getting this extra SkyDrive storage. And, as amnesia points out in the comments below, “If you exceed your remaining storage space when the subscription expires, you’ll be able to view, share, and download files on your SkyDrive, but you won’t be able to upload files until you buy more storage or free up space.”

Update: Microsoft has reached out to us and has clarified that this one-time SkyDrive storage offer is for anyone who has a Microsoft account connected to a Windows Phone. This applies to all Windows Phone customers.
