Microsoft’s Surface RT sold out at Wal-Mart, thanks to popularity or limited stock?

Wal-Mart recently began carrying the Surface RT and Surface Pro devices and now reports are indicating that some stores are already sold out of the Surface RT. Could this be due to an increase in popularity after the recent $150 price drop or is it due to limited stock?

Back in February of this year, Microsoft released the Surface Pro. Within a few hours, the device had sold out on the online Microsoft Store, Best Buy, and Staples. This resulted in what we called an “out of stock crisis” due to frustrated customers and long wait times to replenish the supplies. Fast forward to July, Microsoft revealed its quarterly earning and reported a $900 million dollar loss when it comes to the Surface. Microsoft even dropped the price of the Surface RT by $150 to help boost sales.

However, some Wal-Mart stores are sold out of the Surface RT. While this should come as no surprise that a store would be sold out of a product, but we are talking about the much criticized Surface RT here. A quick check of the Wal-Mart in Los Angeles, California, shows that the Surface RT is indeed in stock, as well as a Wal-Mart in San Diego, California. But it appears that some people are reporting that their local Wal-Mart has sold out of the Surface RT.

To put things into perspective, the Surface RT and Surface Pro both have a history of limited stock, resulting in the device being sold out. Perhaps the reason that certain Wal-Mart stores have sold out of the device is due to the fact that there were only a handful of devices in stock, as opposed to people flooding to purchase the device due to the price drop. At least, this is our take on it.

Surface RT out of stock

Another argument could be that because of the price drop, people are indeed heading over to Wal-Mart to finally purchase the Surface RT. Microsoft launched the Surface RT in October of 2012 and the Surface Pro on February 9th of this year, for those who don’t recall. Microsoft recently announced that the Surface device is now available in 29 different markets and in over 10,000 stores across the globe.
