Microsoft's voice assistant Cortana finally gets Foursquare integration

Back in February of this year, we learned about how Foursquare had received $15 million in funding by the Redmond giant to help them become a sustainable business. In return, Foursquare would help Microsoft with their products and services.

As we reported several months ago, Microsoft’s investment in Foursquare would be used in location data and services in Windows Phone 8.1 — more specifically with the digital voice-assistant Cortana. This integration would allow for tips, discounts, and suggestions based on a user’s location while on the go.

The investment deal between Microsoft and Foursquare allows Microsoft to have “more access” to Foursquare data than is available to other partners. This means Cortana can offer users location-based recommendations.

This feature is now available, reported by a user on Reddit, along with a confirmation from Marcus Ash on Twitter. Ash, for those who did not know, is Microsoft’s Group Program Manager for Cortana on Windows Phone.

So there you have it. Fire up Cortana on Windows Phone 8.1 and enjoy the recommendations. Thanks to server-side updates to Cortana, you don’t have to install any updates to Windows Phone in order to enjoy feature-improvements to Cortana.
