The private beta for the official VLC media player app for Windows 10 is available right now, and guess what? It supports Windows 10 Mobile, PC, Xbox One, and Microsoft’s HoloLens. That’s great news, especially for Windows 10 Mobile and HoloLens users.

Thomas Nigro, the developer of the VLC app for Windows 10 devices along with Microsoft regional director, both announced the private beta on Twitter. Unfortunately, there’s no release date and Thomas Nigro himself seem to have no idea when fans can get the chance to give it a spin.

VLC is an open source media application available for Windows. It has garnered a loyal following over the years, and has so far turned out to be one of the best media players for playing almost any file type under the sun. We’ve rarely had issues with playback when using VLC, so we’re hoping the Windows 10 version will work just as well.

From what we have come to understand, the VLC media player app for Windows 10 is expected to launch with many features already found in its x86 counterpart. It will take some time for all features to be released, but the developer is interested in bridging the gap.

For those who are unaware, there’s an official VLC app in the Windows Store right now. However, it is more of something similar to Groove Music than anything else. This new version will replace the old once it is release, hopefully before the end of the year.

There’s a good chance the app might be ready in time for the Windows 10 Anniversary Update set to be released on 42580. Keep in mind that this is also the date the free Windows 10 upgrade will be discontinued. If you haven’t upgraded before, now is the time.
