Ever since Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were launched, they have both been put to the litmus test to find which gaming console is better. We now may have a temporary answer. In a new interview, Xbox One’s chief Phil Spencer said that Xbox One is the “underdog” among the two consoles. But at the same time, he said that the company intends to ‘win” the gaming generation.
"At some level, it is a competition, and I've said before I want to win," Spencer said. "At the same time, I want to build a great platform for gamers. If somebody else does that too, and they do really well? Hats off to them, but I can have success in our own space if we're selling a lot of consoles and people are buying games", he added.
"I own a PS4, and it's not like I want it to get dusty or not have games. But I do want to sell a lot of Xbox Ones, and for many people that's a direct competition with the PS4." - Phil Spencer
While Spencer maintains company’s stance on winning the console generation, he doesn’t want Sony and other rivals to fail. Spencer believes that the presence of PS4 only makes things better for the ecosystem. "I want to win. I want to win this generation, but I want to win more than I want the other guy to lose. I own a PS4, and it's not like I want it to get dusty or not have games. But I do want to sell a lot of Xbox Ones, and for many people that's a direct competition with the PS4. As the Xbox team, we are the underdog."
Spencer also acknowledged the low sales figures in the month of June and July. However, as he points out, those months aren’t as signification as the coming months, “the battle is really September, October, November, and December."
