Back in January, we reported that users who were getting their Surface Pro 2 replaced, after facing a bunch of performance-related problems, were shipped with the new Intel 4300U chip, which was also confirmed to us by a Microsoft spokesperson. Microsoft even stated that new Surface Pro 2 devices were shipping with the upgraded processor. However, it seems all the customers who have received a replacement unit or ordered a new one are not getting the latest Core i5-4300U processor.
According to a report by PC Pro, one of their readers Jo Halfacre rang up Microsoft Store back in January and questioned them about the processor that was being shipped with the Surface Pro 2. She was assured that it's the i5-4300 processor, and as a result, Halfacre ordered a 128GB Surface Pro 2 for herself, but didn't get the same specs. Her Surface Pro 2 arrived with the old processor and the only option she had was to return the device.
She called up Microsoft again, and their response was a little different this time. They told her the Surface Pro 2 tablets with the new processor are not yet in stock, and was asked to check back again in a week or two. "It was suggested to me that I wait a week or so and then call back, as they were expecting the tablets with the new processors to be available very soon," Halfacre said.
She remained calm and patient, and waited a bit longer. In February, she called up again, and this time, she was assured that tablets with new processors are in stock, and there should be no mistakes this time. Alas, she ended up with the same tablet with the older processor. "So, on 6 February, I made the venture again and called Microsoft. Again I asked which processor was in the Surface Pro 2, and again I was absolutely assured that it was the i5-4300. I purchased one, and you already know the outcome of this: I received another Surface Pro 2 with an i5-4200 processor," she explained.
Well, it seems the folks at Microsoft Store don't even know what they are selling, and whether the product they are sending to their customers is actually the same or not. This might hurt a lot of Microsoft fans, but Halfacre found out she was not the only one with the complaint as several other customers had the same exact problem. "I now feel like I’m in limbo because I don’t feel that I can trust what I am told by anyone from Microsoft," she explained.

With any change to hardware or software, we work to ensure that the product experience remains excellent," a Microsoft spokesperson told WinBeta. Instead of an Intel i5 4200U CPU clocked at 1.6Ghz, replacement devices have been receiving an Intel i5 4300U CPU clocked at 1.9Ghz.
Did you order a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 lately? Did you bother to check the processor it comes with? Just so you know, the box lists "4th generation Intel Core i5 Processor" which doesn't tell if its the i5-4200U or i5-4300U. We're sure there was a bit of miss- communication between Halfacre and Microsoft. We've reached out to Microsoft for clarification.
