Skype extends Desktop API support for call recording and hardware compatibility

Just a few days ago we wrote about how Skype users were being warned that Desktop API was to be discontinued in December and that this would mean that certain applications and hardware would stop working. Today it has been announced that the API will not completely close down and that support will continue for two of the most used features.

In a blog post by Noah Edelstein, it is explained that “we will be extending support for two of the most widely used features — call recording and compatibility with hardware devices”. But this is not necessarily a long-term solution; support will only continue “until we determine alternative options or retire the current solution”.

But this does not mean that the Desktop API has been given a complete stay of execution. “Chat via third party applications, will cease to work as previously communicated.”

A little detail is given about the reasoning behind retiring the desktop API. The blog post explains that the API was not really designed with the cloud in mind and therefore the method of extending the service needs to evolve.

So, it was something of a quick change of heart — or a quick rush to clarify things — but does this latest new make you happier as Skype user?
