Steam usage data for Nov 2013 shows combined Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 share at 18.45%

Yesterday, NetApplications released its stats for the month of November 2013 showcasing a combined Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 market share of 9.3%. However, there is also another method to see how well Windows 8.1 is doing.

According to data from Valve's Steam Hardware & Software Survey for the month of November 2013, Microsoft's latest operating system usage has actually dropped to 18.45%. During the previous month, the usage was at a total of 18.69%. This factors in both 32bit and 64bit of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.

For those that don't know, this data is collected by Valve's Steam game client and measures hardware and software stats on a monthly basis.

According to the data, Windows 8 64bit has a share of 11.49%, which is a -3.59% change from the previous month. Windows 8.1 64bit has a share of 6.11%, which is a +4.17% change compared to the previous month. Windows 8 32bit dropped to 0.62% (-0.13% change) while Windows 8.1 32bit increased to 0.23% (+0.13% change).

Windows 7 64bit actually went up this time around, with a share of 51.76% (+0.33% change).

It appears that either more gamers switched over to Windows 7 64bit for their gaming needs, or that newly released games brought out the PC gamers who are apparently still running Windows 7 64bit on their gaming machines.
