Surface Wireless Display Adapter uncovered, an HDMI dongle that enables wireless mirroring

Microsoft is working on yet another accessory for the Surface line of tablets. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has documents that are publicly available, showcasing a new HDMI dongle from Microsoft that allows you to enable wireless mirroring with your Surface device.

Here’s how it works. You plug one end of the dongle to your TV’s HDMI port and connect to the Surface with the other end of the dongle via WiFi. This will allow you to stream your content from your Surface device to your large screen TV.

Microsoft’s Surface devices already feature Miracast support, allowing wireless delivery of audio and video to and from desktops, tablets, smartphones, and other devices. Unfortunately, compatibility is an issue with Miracast, as it is limited to WiFi Direct supported devices.

Microsoft is looking to make things a bit painless with the Surface Wireless Display Adapter, supporting dual-band WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n. No word on when we will be able to purchase this device, as Microsoft has yet to announce it.
