This Windows 10 Mobile tablet ditches Snapdragon for a Rockchip processor

The folks over at NotebookItalia have gotten their hands on a new Windows 10 Mobile tablet which offers something unique — a processor that isn’t from Qualcomm. The device is called Pipo U8T and features a Rockchip RK3288W processor. Rockchip is a Chinese semiconductor company that designs SoCs using licensed semiconductor cores from other companies and is a direct competitor to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors.

For those concerned, Rockchip isn’t some hole-in-the-wall company. Intel actually found value in Rockchip and announced back in 2014 that the two companies would be partnering for sub-$150 tablet devices.

The device is WiFi-only since the Rockchip does not support integrated mobile broadband. It also features 1GB of memory, 16GB of storage, a 7.85-inch 1024×768 display, and it runs Windows 10 Mobile, rather than Windows 10. There’s another device branded as “Best Buy” (interesting choice of name in my opinion), which features 2GB of memory, 32GB of storage, and Retina-like display. This device also features the Rockchip processor.

You can check out the device in the video below (the first video is in Italian). No details are available yet regarding performance or price of the two devices, although we’re curious to see just how well these Rockchip processors perform.

Thanks for the tip, Laura!
