Microsoft is looking to have Windows across all device categories, including 64-bit computing on ARM, according to a new job listing on the Microsoft Careers website. The listing also mentions that Windows 10 ARM64 support is “aligned” with the upcoming Redstone release, the next big update to Windows 10 slated for later this year. Here’s a snippet from the job listing:

Are you passionate about creating the operating system foundation to enable breathtaking experiences? The silicon ecosystem is always evolving.   Windows across all device categories is readying for the introduction of 64 bit computing with the ARM instruction set (ISA).   Bringing a new ISA to market involves working both broadly and deeply across Microsoft from devdiv to WDG to Server to Office and others depending on the scope of product target.

So what are the benefits of Windows 10 with ARM64 support? As Windows Central points out, imagine a phone that could utilize between 4 to 8GB of memory and the potential of running x86 apps with the rumored x86-to-ARM emulator. It would make an awesome Surface Phone, wouldn’t it?

Here are the responsibilities for the job:

  • Building the plan for ARM64 aligned with the Redstone wave
  • Identify the “big rocks” we need to move, solve, make it happen
  • Build the all-up view of where we are, drive the schedule
  • Work to ensure the necessary hardware is planned for and delivered on time

The interesting takeaway from this is that Microsoft is looking to add ARM64 support to Windows 10 with the upcoming Redstone update. Rumors have been circulating about a Microsoft Surface Phone being in the works, and chances are this news may be related to that device.

There aren’t many details on the topic and saying anything more would just be pure speculation. We’ll keep you posted if we hear more on Windows 10 ARM64 and the Surface Phone.
