Microsoft’s Windows 10 has now been officially available for just over four months, and so it’s time to check out its progress in taking over the operating system world. Last month, Windows 10 stood at 7.94%, representing steady progress. For November 2015, according to NetMarketShare, Microsoft’s latest OS has captured roughly 9% of market share, more than a percentage point increase month-over-month.
Windows 7, which remains the dominant desktop OS, fell from 56.11% to 55.71%, and Windows XP actually slid into third place at 10.59% behind Windows 8.1 at 11.15% (an increase from 10.68%, perhaps as OEMs pushed existing inventory out the door). All versions of Apple’s OS X combined for a paltry 6.98%.
Steady improvement like this bodes well for Microsoft’s goal of a billion Windows 10 installs over the next three years. We’re sure that this year’s holiday blowouts should result in even better results for December.
