As we end another exciting month, it’s time to take a look at how different Windows operating system versions fared in the month of June. According to new data from Net Applications, Windows 7 continues its dominance. The 5 year old operating system improved its market share from 50.06% that it had at the end of May, to 50.55%. Other than that, Windows XP gained some users, and while there is a tad decline in Windows 8’s market share, Windows 8.1’s adoption rate has evidently improved.
Windows 7 has been growing strong since its inception. Over the course of the last couple of months, the operating system has rose from 48.77% to 50.55%. However, same couldn’t be said for Windows 8, which saw a drop from 6.29% to 5.93%. China recently banned the use of Windows 8 OS from all of its government offices. Perhaps, that’s to be blamed for Windows 8’s slow adoption.
On the other hand, Windows 8.1 continued its marginal growth. From April’s 5.88% to June’s 6.35, the operating system now boots 6.61% of the desktop and laptops around the world. The combined share of Windows 8 and 8.1 now sums to 12.54%, which is lower than the 12.64% we saw at the end of May.
Moving ahead, Windows XP continues to be a concerning issue for Microsoft. The decade old operating system registered growth in its market share. The OS now has 25.31% market dominance — which is a tad higher than 25.27% it had at the end of May.
Despite what Tim Cook wants you to believe, Mac continues its struggle in making a significant dent to Microsoft’s humongous dominance in the computing platform. Perhaps that’s why even Apple uses Windows 7 in Mac’s production line. Market share of Mac OS X 10.9 fell from 4.15% to 3.95%, whereas Linux registered a spike from 1.62% it had at the end of May to 1.74% it has now. Also, Chrome OS is still too young to join the party.
