While many of us are eagerly looking forward to the release of Windows 8.1 on October 18th, Microsoft is also set to roll out Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry for embedded OEMs. This operating system offers the “Windows Blue” treatment to Windows Embedded 8.0, the operating system used for kiosks and point-of-sale terminals.

“Microsoft announced this week that Windows 8.1 will become generally available on October 18. At Windows Embedded, we’re excited to be a part of that announcement, as we continue to extend the power of Windows to industry devices. Building on the aligned release schedule first announced in June during the Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Release Preview, on October 18 we will also deliver updates to Windows Embedded 8 to our embedded OEMs,” Microsoft stated in an official blog post.

Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry adds enhanced security, deeper lockdown controls and customizable scenarios, along with expanded peripheral capabilities and better management. The operating system also has an updated user experience, updated charms, improved multi-monitor support, and Internet Explorer 11. There is also improved connectivity and mobility with roaming enhancements, Bluetooth 4.0 support, and NFC printer support.

The majority of us don’t have to worry about this operating system, is it still great to see Microsoft offer the improvements seen in Windows 8.1 for the embedded industry. Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Embedded 8.1 are set for release October 18th.
