Windows Embedded, the operating system used for kiosks and point-of-sale terminals, will also be receiving the Windows Blue treatment. Windows Blue is set to bring forth updates to Windows 8 later this year.

Just recently, Microsoft released a Windows 8 equivalent of the operating system called Windows Embedded 8 Industry. “Windows Embedded 8 Industry provides a fixed-image OS that is especially suited to power industry devices, control panels, kiosks, and yes, POS terminals. It provides a single image with lockdown features and embedded enhancements that will make the next generation of industry devices smarter, better connected, more secure, and more user friendly,” Microsoft explained.

Microsoft is continually focusing on delivering its Windows technology across a wide range of devices and services beyond PCs and tablets. With the upcoming Windows Blue update, Windows Embedded will also benefit. “With Windows Blue, we are furthering our platform alignment with Windows to address a growing category of devices on the edge of enterprise networks and will be bringing the update to market later this year,” Microsoft added. No further details were provided about the update.

Microsoft is expected to showcase a preview build of Windows Blue during Build 2013 developer conference in June. As the months go by, we are sure to hear more about Windows Embedded Blue, so stay tuned!
