Windows Phone 8.1 codename Blue details emerge, features removal of the back buttonBy Ron on Wednesday, Oct 9th, 2013 at 08:01AM
New details have emerged about Microsoft's upcoming "Windows Phone Blue" update to the Windows Phone platform. Apparently called Windows Phone 8.1, this update brings a host of new features, rumored to appear in 2014.
Consistent with previous rumors, there will be universal binaries between Windows RT and Windows Phone. Apparently, Windows Phone 8 has a 33% of API unity with Windows RT, but Windows Phone 8.1 will have 77%.
Windows Phone 8.1 will have better multitasking, as apparently it is a big technical issue with the platform currently. "GDR3 will fix some issues—it will let users manually close apps, for example—but notifications and background processes are a mess and quite inefficient. These issues will apparently be addressed by 8.1," the report states.
Windows Phone 8.1 is also set to support screen sizes of seven inches and greater and the removal of the back button. The back button is being removed due to it being "ill-understood by users."
Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update is set to roll out soon and then we will see the Windows Phone Blue update, aka Windows Phone 8.1. What new features are you hoping to see in 8.1?
