Internet Explorer team brings stunning Gargantia Sky Courier game to the web

Fans of anime will be familiar with the name Gargantia because of the Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet TV series. Now the Internet Explorer team is partnering with the Japanese studio Production I.G to create a web-based game -- Gargantia: Sky Courier. The game shows off just what can be achieved online, with stunning light and cloud effects.

The game uses HTML5, Javascript, and WebGL graphics, and was created using the open source Turbulenz Engine, and this is the first time the Gargantia has made its way to the web. The game is a 3D arcade-style flight simulator. As well as being built with open source tools, the game editor's source code is also being made available on GitHub, so there's scope for gamers to come up with their own creations.

The game is built for touch, making it ideal for anyone who is buying a Surface Pro 3 this week, but it can be controlled with a mouse and keyboard in any web browser -- it just about goes without saying that the Gargantia site is "best experienced on IE11".

"We wanted as many people as possible to be able to experience Gargantia: Sky Courier, and that is why we were very glad to collaborate with Internet Explorer," said Nao Hirasawa, a producer at Production I.G. "IE11's WebGL technology allowed us to create a beautiful, 3D version of our Gargantia world for the web."

As you explore the skies, you can enjoy cut-scenes that are voiced by the original cast of Gargantia. Work through the game in story mode and there are three unique "choose your own adventure" endings to aim for. If you like a more arcade feel to your games, look no further than mission mode, but if you'd like to just explore the beautiful scenery, there's free flight mode as well.
