Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 was rather surprisingly pushed to some Lumia devices before upgrading to the latest Windows 10 Technical Preview. With it came some new features, some rather obvious, others more subtle in nature. Today another feature was discovered, but it isn’t too surprising to see.
As part of the GDR2 update, Windows Phone users now get native video support for Matroska video, otherwise known as MKV. Users will be able to play .MKV files directly from the Xbox Video app without having to convert the files first. And if you have any .MKV movies, TV shows and other video files stored on your phones, Xbox Video will now display them under the ‘my videos’ section.
In December, Microsoft added MKV video support to the Xbox Video app for Windows 8.1, so it isn’t surprising to see the feature making to the mobile counterpart of the app. Windows 10 also has native MKV support. It’s certainly nice to see Microsoft embracing the popular video container, making it less of chore for users to play their videos. Those of you without the GDR2 update, VLC for Windows Phone is a reliable friend.
