During a global launch event, Microsoft announced the general availability of Windows Server 2012. In a keynote speech, Microsoft Server and Tools Business President Satya Nadella described Windows Server 2012 as a cornerstone of the cloud operating system.

“The operating system has always been the heartbeat of IT and is now undergoing a renaissance in the new world of continuous cloud services, connected devices and big data. Microsoft’s unique legacy in the most widely used operating systems, applications and cloud services positions us to deliver the Cloud OS, based on Windows Server and Windows Azure, helping customers achieve a datacenter without boundaries,” Microsoft’s Nadella states during his keynote speech.

Microsoft believes that Windows Server 2012 is the biggest and most transformational server release they have ever had. “It’s not just the great advances we’ve made in storage, networking and virtualization. What’s most transformational is the change of identity. In past, we always viewed Windows Server as an operating system for a single server,” Microsoft adds. Not anymore. Windows Server 2012 will now be viewed as a cloud operating system.
