Microsoft Flight Simulator set for return, new game arrives in 2015

Microsoft Flight Simulator is set to return in 2015. Yes, your eyes do not deceive you. A brand new Microsoft flight simulator is set to debut in 2015 while the gold edition of Flight Simulator X is set to arrive on Steam later this year.

For those that did not know, Flight Simulator was one of the longest running and best known flight simulators for Windows, being marketed as video games. Flight Simulator X was released back in 2006.

The series tanked in popularity as the years went on and Microsoft eventually discontinued the series in 2009. Microsoft revived the series in 2012 when they released Microsoft Flight, but it never took off as expected.

Under this new deal with Dovetail Games, Microsoft's Flight Simulator X Gold Edition will be released as Flight Simulator X Steam Edition, set to arrive later this year. A new game is expected to debut in 2015, but no details were revealed.

"In addition to this licensing agreement, Dovetail Games is pleased to announce that it has also acquired the rights to distribute the multi-award winning Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Gold Edition via Valve’s popular digital retail channel, Steam, entitled Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition," Dovetail Games stated in a press release.

"When it comes to licensing our simulation engine, Dovetail Games is the obvious choice for us to work with. We respect their approach in terms of delivering premium quality simulation games and look forward to seeing their vision of the next chapter in flight simulations unfold," said Kevin Perry, Executive Producer at Microsoft. "In addition to that, they have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to launch simulation products successfully via online platforms, making them the ideal partner to distribute Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition."

These games were perfect for training those who were interested in flying, but it was quite boring compared to combat flight simulators. And unfortunately, the idea as a whole isn't as popular as it once was. Perhaps Dovetail Games can breathe some fresh air into the once-popular series.
