Microsoft releases driver update to fix display adapter crash on Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book

Staff Writer

Microsoft’s newest additions to the Surface family of multi-mode devices have seen welcome adoption by fans of the hardware. The Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book haven’t been without their problems, though. Before now, we’ve seen select units suffer from excessive battery drainage during device sleep as well as dilemmas with the new hardware from Microsoft such as Windows Hello. Yesterday, yet another issue was brought up over on the Microsoft Community forums. The issue revolved around a display driver stopping and resetting, causing screen feedback to lag and even crash and reset itself. Now, Microsoft has released a fix for Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book users. Here are the details from Joe (MSFT) on the forums.
He wrote in response to the issue being pointed out and said that a driver update would be rolling out to users in the latter half of December 2nd, so users who faced the issue as well as those who didn’t will want to check their Windows Update section in Settings. Joe also responded later to say that the updated driver was available through Windows Update, and the version number to look for was v20.19.15.4326. Here is scenario that Joe describes in the forum:

“Display appears to hang, and then you will get a message that the display adapter has reset. Usually happens in certain scrolling situations on web pages.”

Interestingly, Windows Central points out that the issue has not only plagued Microsoft’s Surface device; it’s also been found to happen on newer Intel Skylake-based devices from HP, Lenovo, and Dell so the update will fix a lot of users’ problems. Windows Central also speculates that the issue stemmed from both driver and operating system problems, so a cooperative fix by Intel and Microsoft culminated in the update sent out this afternoon. Regardless of what caused the issue, Microsoft is busy at work fixing community-found bugs, with Joe mentioning that they are well aware of the trackpad issue on the Surface Book, and will be continuing to probe the forums to sort out issues.
