New firmware available now for Lumia 950, 950 XL

Microsoft announced today, via a Microsoft Answers post tweeted out by Gabe Aul, that the company is working on getting better at releasing firmware for Windows 10 Mobile devices. As part of that announcement, Microsoft is releasing firmware updates for the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. There’s also firmware news for the Lumia 830 and the LG Lancet.

If you’re a Windows Insider on one of these devices, you’ll have to open the Windows Insider app and switch your phone from an Insider Ring to Production mode. Once you do that, just go back to System>Updates and check for updates, no need to reboot, etc.

If you’re not on the Insider program, it’s even easier, just check for updates and you should receive the MICROSOFTMDG [1078.38.16025] firmware update. We were able to access the update only minutes after the post on Microsoft Answers went live, although Microsoft does say it is releasing “in select markets”, so your mileage may vary.

As far as details, the firmware includes:

  • Stability fixes
  • Improvements for GPS reliability
  • Improvements for call audio quality
