According to data from Valve’s Steam Hardware and Software Survey for the month ending November 2014, Microsoft’s latest operating system usage has increased to a combined total of 30.05% (up from the previous month’s 29.68%) for both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. This factors in both 32bit and 64bit of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
This data is collected by Valve’s Steam game client, for those that did not know, and measures hardware and software stats on a monthly basis. This data indicates how much share an operating system has (among other stats) when it comes to gaming via Steam.
According to the data, Windows 8.1 64bit saw the biggest increase in share to 23.49%, an increase of 2.06% compared to the month prior. Windows 8.1 32bit saw no change in share, while Windows 8 continued to drop in share, as more Steam gamers are upgrading to Windows 8.1.
Windows 10 64bit has also made an appearance in November’s data, indicating a share of 0.16%. We expect this number to climb as more builds of Windows 10 become available, as well as the upcoming “Consumer Preview” of Windows 10 in January. Windows 7 64 bit remains the popular choice for Steam gamers, with a share of 47.68%. However, that percentage has dropped by 0.10% since the previous month.
