The Unreal Engine is the backbone of an incredibly large number of games -- almost too many to count -- but while things have evolved over the years, something has been lacking: support for Windows RT and Windows Phone. But all of this could be set to change, even if there is no timetable set out at the moment.
Writing in the Unreal Engine Forums, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney responded to a query from a forum user who "dared to ask" whether "there is any planned support for Windows Phone OS & Windows RT". While the idea was pooh-poohed by some, Sweeney replied with more positive news -- something that that will be welcomed by developers.
There is the teasing revelation that "we have been doing some work in this direction", but if you're expecting to see games based on the engine in the near future, you might not want to hold your breath. Work is under way, but "we're a very long way from having a ship-quality implementation".
So it looks as though there could be an exciting new breed of phone- and tablet-based games on the cards. It's not quite clear when we might see them, but the point is that work is being done!
