One of the big software success stories of recent years has been the rise of instant messaging apps on mobile. Replacing the likes of AIM and MSN Messenger, apps such as WhatsApp and Viber are a popular alternative to traditional texting for millions around the globe.
Oddly, and perhaps prophetically, these apps have begun to return to the desktop where they originated, coming full circle. Firstly, WhatsApp announced that users with Google Chrome installed could chat with their friends from their PC, and now WeChat, a popular Chinese instant-messaging clients, has become the latest to take the plunge.
Much as with WhatsApp, users are tied to their mobile, first having to scan a generated QR code before logging in. Without a mobile present, it is impossible to use the service. Moreover, western users will be disappointed to hear that, for the moment, the app is only available in Chinese.
