Microsoft enthusiast WalkingCat discovered that Windows 10’s File History backup system will probably get removed with the release of the Fall Creators Update.

Windows 10’s built-in backup system, File History

Windows 10 has a backup system named File History which can be used to backup files from your device. You can benefit from this feature whenever you want to transfer your data from an old PC to a new machine, or whenever you want to perform a clean install on your computer. Unfortunately, this feature may, unfortunately, disappear in the future from Windows 10.

Microsoft’s new internal build of Windows 10

The company unveiled a new internal build of Windows 10 to Windows Insiders and includes small changes, the most annoying one being the the File History feature.

In the Settings app, if you hit the Backup setting, you will notice that Windows 10 currently shows an option that allows you to restore files using File History but, it lacks an option that would let you create an actual backup.

WalkingCat found an official note in the latest released build that states that File History feature was indeed removed and now making new backups with it is not possible.

Potential alternatives for the File History feature

The possibility that File History will make a comeback sometime in the future became quite unlikely. All we can do is sit tight and hope that Microsoft is working on developing something better that will successfully replace the File History feature.

Users have already begun speculating this, and some of them posted all kinds of possible alternative for the File History on WalkingCat’s post such as the new Time History View and a potential low-cost OneDrive backup.
