Currently in the Windows Store, the top five free apps in the United States based on popularity are:

  1. Skype

  3. Google Search
  4. Microsoft Solitaire Collection
  5. Photo Editor

Let’s not forget the top five paid apps currently in the Windows Store:

  3. Fruit Ninja
  4. Angry Birds Star Wars
  5. Plex

As of May 5th, there are 67,767 apps in the Windows Store, an increase of 2,299 apps in just one week. Compared to last week, Microsoft Solitaire Collection has entered the top-five free apps rank while the Twitter app dropped out of the top-five list. In the top-five paid apps list, we see a new app, Game Dev Tycoon, make its appearance, taking over the second place spot. Bejeweled LIVE is no longer on the top-five paid apps list.

Every week, we will feature one app or game that we will rank as the “best” Windows Store app for the week. It doesn’t mean that this app is better than every other app out there, it just means that this app should get your attention this week. The following week, we will showcase another great app, and so on. So here we go:

Record Voice & Pen

Record Voice & Pen is a free app available in the Windows Store for Windows 8 and Windows RT. This app has seen an increasing amount of positive reviews, mostly 4 to 5 stars. The idea of the app is pretty simple. Record your voice and pen drawings or imported images at the same time. Once you are done, you can export your recordings into a video file for uploading and sharing to social media outlets.

“Record Voice & Pen is an app for creating video’s for lessons, instructions, presentations or any type of screencasting. It records your voice and the drawing with your pen or finger at the same time. You can annotate pictures while explaining, and share it as videos (mp4 files) by mail, upload to YouTube or Facebook, or use it in presentations and classrooms,” the app description reads.
